Washington was unopposed in 1788 and 1792, but in 1796, there were two candidates with quite different ideas about the role of the federal government. John Adams, the incumbent VP, believed in a strong central government. Thomas Jefferson, the first secretary of state, believed that the states should have most of the power and the federal government should restrict itself to taking only those actions which states could not do,such as coin money and raise an army. Besides their views, the candidates had different personalities. Adams was stiff and formal and liked to be treated like royalty. Jefferson was more laid-back and had a better rapport with the common people.
