The Separatists lived in Leiden, Netherlands for several years before eventually sailing to North America on the Mayflower.
Puritans and Separatists
The Pilgrims were a group of Separatists who traveled from England, to Holland, and then onto the New World in 1620. The Separatists wanted to separate from the church of England because they didn't like the religious views and were being harshly persecuted.
The Pilgrims broke away from the Church of England that King Henry instituted. They were persecuted for their beliefs and that they did not attend the Church of England. By the time the Pilgrims broke away from the church, King James was ruling. Some of these "Separatists" went to Holland. They lived there until they felt the Dutch were a bad influence. And again, some of those separatists left for America. These Separatists then made their "pilgrimage" (journey) to America. Today these Puritans/Religious Dessenters/Separatists are called the Pilgrims.
In 1607 one congregation of Separatists from Scrooby, England, migrated to Holland because the religious tolerance there permitted them to preach and practice their faith unmolested. After they had spent a decade in Holland, though, a problem began to surfaced as a serious as the English persecution. The Separatists' children were picking up the Dutch language and habits, and these threatened the spiritual growth of the congregation and the cultural heritage of the community. This was all found in my United States History Third Edition book Chapter 2.
The pilgrims had left England for Holland to flee religious persecution. They left Holland after disliking the "dutchification" of their children. The pilgrims were separatists who wanted to remain English but wished to be free to practice their religion. They secured a charter to go to Jamestown, their original destination, but were blown off course. After scouting the surrounding area the pilgrims finally settled at Plymouth Plantation.
