Families traveled in West groups because it was much safer and also so that people dont get lost. Traveling in groups also was necessary because if they got attacked by enemies, they could defend themselves.
Wagon trains served several purposes.
1) they were usually led by a guide who knew the route, preferred camping locations, water sources, hazards, customs, etc.
2) wagon trains were organized to provide some governance to resolve disputes among those traveling
3) by traveling in a group they were able to assist one another when wagons broke down, animals got sick, people got injured, or hostile native attacked.
4) when traveling in a group it was not necessary for everyone to carry everything that might be needed - you only need so many sets of tools for fixing wagons for example - so the overall loads could be lessened
5) traveling west was an arduous undertaking and it is natural to want to have some company on such a journey - to allay loneliness. It also allowed members to be available to share complaints and encourage one another.
