There was no economic impetus to do so. The south was doing very well raising and importing tobacco, cotton and other agricultural outputs. The south also did not have some of the other advantages of the north in terms of a good network of waterways and access to minerals conducive to manufacturing; however, there were places where all that did exist. The south also had a lot more land relative to the north and its population.

How did the geography of the north and south influence the viewpoints of slavery?

The North was much more industrial while the South was much more agricultural. Businesses in the North needed skilled laborers where on Southern farms no real skill was needed! Of course as everyone knows at the time, black men and women were not educated so manual labor was all they could do. This is the reason why slavery flourished in the South and had been emancipated in the North.
