Very much so. The South was dominated by cotton-growers who fantasized that they were knights of chivalry, and discouraged their sons from soiling their hands in industry or commerce. They had virtually no industry at the outbreak of war. But they did improvise with some success, for example, building the first submarine.
The South wanted to start the Civil War because they thought they had the rights to do what they wanted. They did not wants to stop slavery, build factories, give up their farms.
