Many native groups had already been converted to Christianity by French explorers; however, their particular sect of Christianity was Roman Catholicism. As the Puritans had separated from the Church of England due to the fact that it was still very close to its Catholic roots, they were dissatisfied with this. They also neglected the fact that most natives still held traditional spiritual beliefs as well, even if they had embraced Christianity. Some did succumb to Puritan attempts at conversion, but it was not popular.
Actually, most of them did. The Spanish converted almost all of Meso-America, all the Andean Civilizations, and the Portuguese converted all of Brazil, and the British and French managed to convert a good portion of the Part of North America north of Meso-America.
