∙ 6y agoUnless you REALLY like far-fetched Conspiracy theories, Pentagon DIDN'T attack the WTC. Terrorists of a supposedly Muslim inclination attacked BOTH Pentagon and the WTC.
Pentagon b/c it's a symbol for American Military, WTC b/c it represents a reasonably open World where goods, ideas and people are free to move.
Both of the above being things the planners and funders of the attack didn't like.

∙ 9y agoIt's likely that the terrorists who flew into the Pentagon on September 11, 2011, were originally trying to aim for the White House, but couldn't find it. If you look at the flight path (which was, at least back then, published in the paper) you can see that it circled the city twice before hitting the Pentagon. They wouldn't have had much time to try again; the fighters had already been scrambled and were on the way.
The Capitol is easy to see, and the Mall, and the Washington Monument. (It's likely that the airplane that crashed in Pennsylvania, when the passengers stormed the airplane and tried to take it back, was supposed to hit the Capitol.) The White House is off to the north of the Mall; if they hadn't been familiar with DC, it would have been easy to miss the White House.
It's possible, at least. The White House isn't all that big; three stories, where everything around is a lot taller. And there are lots of trees nearby, which would serve to make it harder to see from above.
The Pentagon, on the other hand, is big and obvious, right on the river, not so many trees, and MUCH easier to see.
