Andrew Jackson, and the Georgians of the time, wanted the gold that was discovered in Dahlonega, GA. The Cherokee's fertile land was also demanded by the Georgians, who were quickly destroying their farmland by over-use. An interesting fact is that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee, telling Jackson that it was illegal for him to force their removal, however Jackson ignored the Supreme Court and forced them out anyways.
The president at the time, Andrew Jackson, wanted to clear up southern land to allow for the development of new plantations. He also hated Native Americans, as he had made his reputation in the U.S. destroying unruly native Americans in what is now Florida and Louisiana.
So, he targeted a group of Cherokees in northern regions of Alabama and Georgia for "exportation." He demanded they be shipped west so that the land could be used for white planting.
Even after the Supreme Court ruled these demands unconstitutional, Jackson organized their move West and forced them off their property.
