Because in trench warfare, defense is easy, but offense is costly and difficult. Charging headlong into rows of machine guns is almost always a disaster. So if you can't advance, and neither can your enemy, you get a stalemate.
Trench Warefare was such a stale mate because of the new weapons that were created, neither side understood how to successfully use these new weapons to their advantage. Both sides were using old battle techniques, such as fighting up close. But during that time the old guns could not shoot as far and as accurate, but with the new lethal weapons they would.
because the Belgians fought against the Germans so the Germans plan failed and and both sides had to dig trenches and they both new that whoever got to the sea first controlled what came in and out. So both side tried to out wit each other and both failed so they couldn't do anything.
