This was part of the overall Union strategy(essentially divide and conquer). The first part of that was achieved with the control of the Mississippi River. Sherman captured Atlanta as it was an important railroad junction. He then set out on his infamous March to the Sea,cutting Georgia in half.

Why was there a possibility that Atlanta was a target for a Union siege?

Atlanta was a major Confederate city. It was a railway hub for supplies and transportation of soldiers. It there was a target of the Union. A battle for Atlanta would be costly and there was the possibility that the Union would need to use the tactic of siege to finally force a surrender of the city. There were battles between the North and South on the way to Atlanta. Union General Sherman believed that after these battles, Southern forces would retreat into Atlanta. This never happened and therefore no long siege was needed. Southern military forces had evacuated Atlanta and Sherman marched in with no opposition in late September 1864.

What three armies did General William T Sherman use to capture Atlanta Georgia?

Union General William T. Sherman was on the march as he drove into the deep South. His objective was the large railway hub that included the large Confederate city of Atlanta. To get there, however, he would need to get passed Confederate General Joseph Johnston. Sherman had good commanders in his goal of reaching Atlanta. He had three armies:1. Army of the Cumberland led by General Thomas;2. Army of the Tennessee led by General McPherson; and3. Army of the Ohio led by General Schofield.Sherman's forces totaled 100,000 men and once again, he faced Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee with 60,000 men.Sherman had hoped to outflank Johnston at New Hope Church ib Georgia, but it was not to be. On May 25 and 26, 1864, Sherman's forces were routed at New Hope Church and he would have to rethink his plans for defeating the Army of Tennessee.
