What was the Arms Race?
It was in the middle of the Cold War. This is describing the "race" between Russia (USSR) and the United States and both of their atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs. Arms Race = A race between to nations to produce the most weapons and the most powerful weapons. Ex) The cold war.. the USSR and the USA. And im guessing the US goal was to get more weapons than the USSR?

They didn't. By the time the USSR finished fighting Germany (by themselves because Churchill and FDR didn't want to help), the US had been fighting Japan for a while. The USSR did declare war on Japan after the Germans surrendered. Before the USSR could do anything, the US dropped it's two atomic bombs. The Japanese were rumored to have started peace negotiations with the USSR agreeing to act as the liason after the Little Boy bombing, but the Fat Man prevented it. Many say the US bombed Japan because they didn't want the USSR sweeping in as the hero.

It took the US 2 to 3 years to build the industrial infrastructure needed to begin building Atomic fission bombs. When the US first started building bombs in those factories in 1945 they could build 3 bombs a month with the expectation by the end of the year of building 7 a month. You compute the time per bomb. But remember this is just beginning production, with each bomb hand assembled. These bombs were delivered by the factory to the field as a kit of parts in multiple crates. Assembly of a MK-III Fatman type bomb from this kit took 3 days in the field. At the peak of production both the US & USSR had the capacity to build 100s of Hydrogen fusion bombs per day! You compute the time per bomb. This was full assembly line production. These bombs were delivered by the factory to the field fully assembled and ready for use.

The role USSR in fighting Hitler was huge. Russians lost about 20 million people. Every family in USSR lost someone in this war. The USSR began the war with a non aggression pact with Germany and Japan. Germany broke the pact and invaded the USSR. The USSR was not prepared for the war with Germany, and was not able to stop Hitler's armies until just outside Moscow - the capital of Russia - in the autumn 1941. But then they kept all their strength and people and turned the Hitler back. The Red Army, army of USSR, captured a lot of German soldiers and even armies, of which very few ever returned to Germany as they helped to rebuild what they had destroyed. The USSR was able to push the German armies out of Russia and occupy Berlin, East Germany. The record shows, however, that Stalin's orders were to shoot ant Russian soldiers that retreated in the early days of the Nazi successes.
