The Soviets and Americans knew a clash after WW2 was inevitable. While the joined forces to fight the Nazis in WW2, part of the Nazi intelligence would help the Americans fight the Russians in the Cold War. The conflict was mainly over democracy versus Communism, as well as which future "super power" held sway and influence over their supporters and the world as a whole.

They had never really been friends during WW 2. They were allies against Nazi Germany, which is something else. The US and its Western allies needed the Russians to fight the Germans in the East and weaken them so that they could attack the Germans in the West with a good chance of success.

The Russians on the other hand needed the money, the military hardware and all the other materials sent to them bij the West to beat back the Germans.

But once the Germans were being beaten, all the old mistrust of Communism and anti-Communism from before the war returned. Then Stalin decided to hang on to the countries the Russians had liberated and turn them into Soviet sattelite states. He also tried to chase the other Allies out of Berlin. That quickly soured relations and confirmed the West's fears about Communist expansionism. A little later and through amongs others very active spy work the Soviets developed an atomic bomb of their own. And so the 'cold war' started that was to last until 1989.
