The Vikings in Iceland were outcasts; those kicked out of Norway, or having left it because they did not fit in. Iceland had a representative government called the Althing instead of being ruled by a king. They also had alimony for a divorced wife. Perhaps they wanted to portray themselves as refugees eeking out survival in a harsh land, instead of living in paradise, so that invaders would not move in on them. Or......perhaps the currents have shifted since the days of the Vikings, causing a change in climate. Perhaps Iceland was really covered in ice then, Greenland was really green, and wild grapes really grew in Vinland.

The current population of Iceland is just over 250,000 people. This is because when the Vikings discovered it, they did not want everyone cramping into this small island, that is why it got its name. By then, people said "Iceland, hmm, it sounds very cold so I dont want to go there".
viking who wanted other viking to trade with their current port called the frozen country Greenland to trick the arriving vikings to come there and Iceland is called Iceland because it was a rival group of the Greenland vikings and since the Greenland viking were stronger they named the country Iceland so none would go there and take business away from greenland
When the Vikings arrived in Iceland they discovered that it held many resources and riches. They named it Iceland in order to discourage other people from settling there so that they could have it all to themselves. They named Greenland because it was barren and icy and so that people people would settle there instead. Iceland is also home to Europe's biggest glacier (Vatnajokull), the Vikings might have first seen this part of Iceland and noted the ice, ergo, Iceland. Iceland was named Iceland to prevent settlers from moving there, and Greenland was named Greenland to make settler move there.
the vikings were not the best at map making, but they were somewhat skilled. They named places such as iceland because it is unappealing and wanted to keep it a secret. They named Greenland so people would go there because they didnt want it. They were slightly above average and made many of the first maps known to man
