They were called the Wars of the Roses because it was fought between the houses of York and Lancaster. One of the symbols of the house of York was the white rose and one of the symbols of the house of Lancaster was the red rose.

They were fighting over who would be the next king of England and therefore rule the country. Lots of power and money at stake so the fighting was bitter. The roses represent the two houses or families who were fighting for the kingdom. The white rose and the red rose. The white rose represented the York family and the red rose represented the Lancaster family.

Legend has it that while the Duke of York and the Lancaster King were having an argument over who was King of ALL of Great Britain, the Lancaster King plucked a red rose from a nearby rosebush and the Duke of York likewise selected a White one. Each monarch declared his flower as the symbol of his cause and therefore began the "War of Roses".
