You are probably referring to some work of literature. In real life, no such letter was written. The ancient Greeks moreover had an aversion of letter-writing that other near-Eastern cultures had not. The ancient Greeks distrusted personal letters in general because they could easily be forged or fall in the wrong hands.

Moreover, in their social system of small city-States seperated by either water or mountains there was not much interaction between them. And within each city-State, anyone you wished to communicate with was never more than a ten minutes' walk away. So if you wanted to tell someone something, you walked over and told him.

Another reason that women of one State would not write letters to women in another State had to do with the position of women in ancient Greece. Spartan women had a level of equality and freedom that was totally unmatched by any other community in Greece. Athenian women, other than high-class prostitutes, were kept indoors as the posession of first their fathers, then of their husbands. They had no rights at all and most of them were illiterate. They certainly would not have been allowed to receive letters written by any outsiders.

Would you rather lived in Sparta or in Athens?

This depends entirely on who you are - women were far better off in Sparta as opposed to Athenian women who were housekeepers and child-rearers; Sparta had serfs who were mostly free on their own farms, Athens had slaves; Spartan citizens lived for military service, supported by the serfs, Athenian citizens had to work at a job and also do military service. Take your pick.
