The Ancient Egyptians, mind you, were a "Pagan" people. Their reason for entombing items was so that the deceased would have the things they need in the afterlife. This was also the reason that many other "Pagan" people did such things. It is not out of the realm of comprehension though to assume that some items may have been just a momento for the deceased. Leaving things in a casket is not an uncommon practice even today.
