The Great War (WWI) was the first of its kind, one that involved many nations.
The Great War. The Great War. The Great War. The Great War.
It was called "the Great War".
The Great American Desert.
It never stopped being referred to as the great war as a matter of fact. People till this day still sometimes call WWI "The great War" and WWII "The War". Though I'm sure you have also heard people call WWI "The war to end all wars" as well.
No, that would be an Oxymoron. Great War except defined in terms of area, scope, or moral standing can be great. (What a great time I had in the War). (Wasn't that a great little War?) (Did you have fun in the War? It was Great.) War is not great when it is up close and personal.
Britain thought so much of World War I that they call it "The Great War". And there has not been a better war since. But since the great war was really a war about nothing, it really was a shabby endeavor.
The Great War or The War to End All Wars
The cold war did not spark the great war
THE GREAT WAR WAS WORLD WAR 1
World War I was initially called the Great War because so many nations and empires were involved over such a large territory on many different fronts. It was "great" because it was big, not because anyone thought it was good or wonderful. Once World War 2 got going, it was no longer appropriate to call the first one "Great" and people stopped calling it that.

Great War It was also called the War to End all Wars.
