An iron lung is a large machine that enables a person to breathe when normal muscle control has been lost or the work of breathing exceeds the person's ability. An iron lung forces air in and out of the indiiduals lungs, thus providing artificial respiration.

People who need to use the iron lung have some sort of respiratory disease. Probably polio.

Polio paralyzes the respiratory muscles and the person will not be able to breathe.

For the person to be able to breathe, they went inside the iron lung. It is like being inside a big glass case except your head is not inside.

it is air tight and it uses pulsations of high and low pressure to force air into and out of the lungs to make normal breathing movements.

An iron lung is also referred to as a negative pressure ventilator. It is a metal structure that encases the body entirely, except for the head, and it forces breath with controlled negative pressure. This type of respirator is old technology.
