The word mine, a verb meaning to excavate for ore, arrived in the English language from Old French early in the 14th century. It is believed to have most likely originated from a Celtic source - etymological analysis has revealed the Old Celtic word meini, from which the Welsh and Irish words for mine (mwyn and mein respectively) also originate. It is worth noting that Greece and Italy are unlikely sources for the word mine, as minerals were relatively scarce in these territories, in stark contrast to Celtic land ____________________________________________________________________ First recorded 1303, through Old French 'myn' probably via Celtic source (Cornwall/Wales) cf. Welsh 'mwyn', (southern) Irish 'mein' as "ore, mine"
