Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the fall of Saigon in 1975 by the new communist government, in honor of their great leader Ho Chi Minh.

......

I would dispute the fact that Ho Chi Minh is a "great leader." This is the viewpoint of the communists and certainly is not shared by all Vietnamese. If this was true, we wouldn't experience the great exodus of Vietnamese boat people after the fall of Saigon.
