LSD was first synthesized on November 16, 1938 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann at the Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland, as part of a large research program searching for medically useful ergot alkaloid derivatives.

Its psychedelic properties were unknown until 5 years later, when Hofmann, acting on what he has called a "peculiar presentiment," returned to work on the chemical. While re-synthesizing the chemical for further study on April 16, 1943, Hofmann became dizzy and was forced to stop work. In his journal, Hofmann wrote that after becoming dizzy he proceeded home and was affected by a "remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness". Hofmann stated that as he lay in his bed he sank into a not unpleasant "intoxicated like condition" which was characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. He stated that he was in a dreamlike state, and with his eyes closed he could see uninterrupted streams of "fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors." He had attributed the psychoactive effects he experienced to accidentally absorbing a tiny amount of LSD into his skin. Three days later on April 19, 1943 he would take a much larger dose in order to test its effects further; this day would later be referred to as the "Bicycle Day".

LSD was created on accident by a Swiss chemist named Albert Hoffmann. While researching lysergic acid derivatives, Hofmann first synthesized LSD on November 16, 1938. The main intention of the synthesis was to obtain a respiratory and circulatory stimulant (an analeptic). It was set aside for five years, until April 16, 1943, when Hofmann decided to take a second look at it. While re-synthesizing LSD, he accidentally absorbed a small amount of the drug through this fingertips and serendipitously discovered its powerful effects.

Funny enough, when people have taken LSD it does improve the respiratory system and it is easier to breath if you have a stuffy nose etc.

LSD was created by Albert Hoffmann in Switzerland. His goal was to make a respiratory and circulatory stimulant.

It was later used in psychiatry, and rumors of its use as a "truth" serum caused the US government to conduct extensive experiments on it as well.

LSD was first developed when a Swiss chemist was working on ways to synthesize a medicinal plant in order for companies to use it in pharmaceutical production. He abandoned the project for five years and when he returned to the project he accidentally absorbed some of the drug into his skin and learned of LSD's effects.

What is the easiest way to make LSD?

There is no easy way to make LSD. LSD is made semi-synthetically (full synthesis is not practical) from ergot-derived compounds which are generally closely monitored. Thus, in order to make LSD, one would need a source of one these compounds, a great deal of laboratory equipment/reagents, and chemistry skills. Of course, manufacture of LSD is also a felony in most of the world. Thus, making LSD is not easy. As an example, once some of the biggest manufacturers of LSD (Pickard and Apperson) were arrested in 2000, the supply of LSD plummeted and has not since recovered.
