They didn't make stone castles weak. On the contrary, they made them very strong. They were an improvement to the earlier motte and Bailey castles made out of wood. Stone castles are strong in these ways:

  • They wouldn't rot for many centuries to come
  • They wouldn't set on fire
  • Stone is heavy, therefore not enabling attackers to dislodge big pieces in order to break in
