As a form of self-punishment, flagellation was supposed to bring you closer to the pain and suffering, others inflicted on Christ. Making you more Christ like. It was a poor, but manifested way for people to think they were "paying" with pain, for their sins. Trouble is that it related holiness and Christ like behavior with suffereing and pain.

The gift of religion and holiness was supposed to be and always should be the happyness and joy of finding your God. What was found here was a devil who loved pain and suffering, and tried to make it holy.

God is good, Pain is bad.
