In 1921, his Holiness the 13th Daila Lama permitted access to Mount Everest for surveyors and explorers George Mallory and mountaineer Andrew Irvine in order to map and survey the land that had never been investigated. In an 1885 book by Clinton Thomas Dent titled Above the Snow Line, Clinton proposed that it was indeed possible to climb and reach the summit of Everest. In 1924 the climb to reach the summit was attempted, but because Mallory never returned, it is unknown whether or not he had actually reached the summit. A later event and attempt by Sir Edmund Hillary and two other mountain climbers in 1953 proved the first to reach the summit as recorded.
