Okay, in Tom's testimony(the truthful one), Mayella had asked him to come in to look at the door because it was 'broken'. (Tom walked past everyday and often did odd jobs for her). However, he saw that the hinges were working perfectly. He wanted to leave when Mayella asked him to come into the house to get something from the top of a large chiffarobe. That's when she came onto him.

In Mayella's testimony, she claimed that he had never gone into the house before and that she asked him to come inside to bust up a chiffarobe. That's when Tom so-called raped her.

Tom Robinson passed by the Ewell house every day going to and from work at Mr. Link Deas' place. Mayella called him in regularly to help her with some chores. She was terribly lonely even though she had lots of little brothers and sisters running around. Since she was white and he was black, he kind of had to help her when she asked him to. Otherwise, it might have seemed disrespectful even though she is at the bottom of the social status anyway (she's still above the blacks, though, in this 1930's southern racist community).

He said that Mayella Ewell asked him for some help with something inside. I think on this occasion he was asked to chop up a cabinet.
