Controlling the Mississippi was an important part of the Anaconda Plan. It allowed the Union freedom of movement and freedom from attack in the rear.

Gettysburg ended the South's attempt to attack into the Union and doomed the Army of Northern Virginia to a purely defensive role. Victory by the Union at Vicksburg gained full control of the Mississippi River, split off Texas from the rest of the deep South, and ended any concern of attack in the West.
The Union sought control over rivers that were located in the South. By doing so, it curtailed Confederate use of these rivers to transport soldiers and supplies. The Union wanted to also use these rivers for the same purpose and aid their invasions of enemy territories. Railroads were also used for the same purposes. So they were areas of contention. Now, also the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, both on the coast states of the Confederacy, were used to transfer cotton to Europe by the South and also to receive supplies to Southern ports. Therefore, control of the aforementioned bodies of water was ongoing.
While Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was preparing to invade the Union, Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee was embarking upon a campaign to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi in the heart of the Confederate States of America. Upon reaching Vicksburg, Grant laid siege to the city for forty six days, culminating with the city's surrender on July 4th, 1863. This defeat gave the Union control the the Mississippi water way and essentially cut the Confederacy in half.

After the fall of Memphis and New Orleans in 1862 Vicksburg Mississippi remained a transit point for Confederate supplies across the Mississippi River. The high bluffs which the town sits on are a singular feature of the Mississippi Delta region and made the city a natural fortress for the Confederacy. Control of the town and the bluffs meant control of the Mississippi river and all the commerce and communications that went with it. Therefore the town became the most important strategic objective of the Union Army in the West from December 1862 until the town surrendered on July 4 1863,
