The Vikings didn't raid on a constant basis. They were traders foremost, and would set sail with trade goods to start themselves off with. If they came across an easy target, as the previous answer said, they would raid it. Large centers of trade however they would do just that; trade. Trade items included Lumber, animal pelts and furs, walrus ivory, whale fat, honey, butter and cheese, and other common goods. They would trade these for things such as gold and silver, silk and other textiles (including furs and pelts of different animals than what they had to begin with) and amber.
The Vikings invaded Europe because their population had grown too big to support itself at home.
