Why did the vikings go into battle?

The vikings raided so that they could become rich and have goods from all over the world. They raided and destroyed villages and towns, esecially churches and monastires because they had gold and silver.

The Vikings didn't raid on a constant basis. They were traders foremost, and would set sail with trade goods to start themselves off with. If they came across an easy target, as the previous answer said, they would raid it. Large centers of trade however they would do just that; trade. Trade items included Lumber, animal pelts and furs, walrus ivory, whale fat, honey, butter and cheese, and other common goods. They would trade these for things such as gold and silver, silk and other textiles (including furs and pelts of different animals than what they had to begin with) and amber.
The Vikings invaded Europe because their population had grown too big to support itself at home.
To get wealthy by stealing expensive stuff from other people.

vikings went on raids cause they didn't have enough land to settle in and not enough land to grow crops.

Of course to raid villages to get war loot (money) and food for them or their family if they have one.

They also took many slaves to sell. People meant money. This was called loot as well.

Simply because if there's nothing else stopping you - like police or military or morals - and if you're better at fighting than your enemy, then robbing and looting is an overall faster way to get wealthy than trading or farming to get money.
