Well, it was because the Soviet Union and United States were the two superpowers of the world, and thus competing for superiority. It lasted so long because the Soviet Union lasted so long. During the 1980s, it started breaking apart and by the early 1990s it had broken up, ending the Cold War.

They also termed it the "Cold War" because of a potential nuclear war between the two that would destroy each other altogether, but they never directly fought. It was not only about that, either. It was fighting for dominance over technology and weapons and such. They did have proxy wars , though. As in, they would take separate sides in a war and proceed to help that side.
