Christopher Columbus asked for too much. Way to much money, and though he wanted to sail under the flag of Italy, he wanted to be king of the land he found. SO he sailed for Spain.

Answer 2

Because there was no such country as Italy at the time. Christopher Columbus was a citizen of the Republic of Genoa (Italian: Repubblica di Genova), but Genoa refused to sponsor the voyage.

His actual name was: Cristoforo Colombo; in Italian and Cristóbal Colón; in Spanish.
