In 1519 Ferdinand Magellan, who was from Portugal, led an exploration from Spain to circumnavigate the world. He was killed in the Philippine Islands so he never personally completed his voyage. In 1522, one ship from the original fleet arrived back in Spain. Magellan therefore, never sailed to the Indian Ocean.
Though born into Portuguese nobility, Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was sailing for Spain's King Charles I, having been refused support by Emmanuel I of Portugal. In 1519, Magellan captained the first circumnavigation of the world, but died during the voyage in 1521 while battling natives in the Philippines. Only 1 of his 5 ships and 18 of his 250 men completed the journey back to Spain in 1522.

There is a bit of confusion as to who actually rounded the globe first. One possible answer we see is Ferdinand Magellan but we know that he was killed in a fight in Philippines and his crew continued the voyage to sail round the world and reached back home in Portugal where they set off. There is also another point to make is, before Magellan was killed, he has sailed from Portugal to the west and around the world. So there are 2 answers here; One could be Ferdinand Magellan with his filipino servant and the other could be Magellan's crew who completed the voyage after he died in Philippines.
Ferdinand Magellan didn't become king of Spain because Magellan killed by Lapu-lapu,king of Mactan,Cebu.Last 1521 and even Magellan did not return back to Spain he was poisoned which lead him to death.
