The war was more about self determination and States rights. Abraham Lincoln made a masterful move turning the war effort into a slave based war and still not freeing any slaves. The Emancipation proclamation was an attempt by the north to rid itself off slave holdings by converting them into humans (they were considered property). This kept the North of feeding and keeping captured slaves. The horrible concept of slavery finally ended (in the U.S.A.) the following December after the civil war ended with the 13th amendment. Some countries still practice slavery today, but not to the scale seen in America.
