In those days there was not the samepressure to be well educated. To many it did not seem important and illiteracy was widespread. The cost of education was prohibitive. And generally education was reserved for the wealthier parts of the community unless on the odd occasion there was the personal drive by a poor family heads or children to become educated. It was not until the exes wealth brought about by the industrial revolution and pressure was brought to bear by the newly empowered middle classes that education was nationalised and made compulsory that education was Finlay made available to everyone.
