We go from Primaries in each state, to delegates that represent those candidates chosen, to the convention and then finally the delegates from those states must officially nominate the candidate, if the delegates agree an indivudal can be nominated by acclamation. From there the individual nominated must formally accept the nomination.

It is different between Democratic and Republican sides, but the precinct delegates are bound for the first "ballot" (actually a second caucus), and then free to do what they want in the second. That being said delegates usually have views that agree with those of the candidate they support and it is unlikely that large shifts would occur.
