This is very old germanium diode and nomenclature comes before a standard had been established for semiconductors. They modeled 0A after the vaccum tubes where 0 - zero means 0Volts filament voltage and A meant single diode.
Latter , semiconductor nomenclature come where the first number was telling a number of PN junctions followed by N (this is for US), Japanese and Europeans had different naming standards
0a79 ( germanium diode )in glass construction form is used in AM detector circuits.
A crystal detector is a diode, often used in non-powered radio receivers. It conducts at a much lower voltage than a typical silicon diode, making it easier to generate the signal amplitude required from the tuning circuit.
It's a high voltage diode, typically used in microwave ovens.
FM provides noise immunity, whereas AM is easily affected by noise. With FM, the amplitude of the sound is converted into a shift in frequency. So the volume is limited by the bandwidth, but the frequency of the sound can vary as much as it likes, giving a higher fidelity sound. Spikes induced on the signal usually affect the amplitude of the signal. The amplitude of an FM signal is not used in the demodulation process and is therefore immune to spikes in the signal. AM was first used in radio because it is very easy to achieve using basic components. A single rectifier only, is needed to recover the audio. FM is quite a complicated process and could only be achieved once electronics had progressed.
It is used for the radio control of model aircraft, boats, cars.

In case of coherent demodulation carrier used for demodulation purpose is in phase and frequency synchronism with carrier used for modulation purpose. For non-coherent demodulation it is not in synchronism.
yes, diode can be used as rectifier diode to convert ac to dc

A diode is used primarily as a Rectifier
a diode is any electronic device that conducts current significantly better in one direction than the other. it can be a vacuum tube diode, a gas filled tube diode, a point contact semiconductor diode, a junction semiconductor diode, any of several metal oxide diodes, etc.typical applications are:AC power rectifiersAmplitude modulated radio signal demodulators (detectors)Gas filled tube diodes used to be used in certain types of digital counters and computer registersDigital logic gatesSign detection circuits in analog computersVoltage clamps and clippersFrequency modulated radio amplitude limiters to remove static and interferenceetc.
yes ofcourse diode can be used as rectifier but it's an uncontrolled rectification.
varactor diode is a correct answer
zener diode
It's a high voltage diode, typically used in microwave ovens.
The difference between the pn-junction diode and the zener diode is that the pn-junction diode is used for rectification while the zener diode is used for rectification and stabilization. Also, the zener diode can function in the breakdown region while the pn-juntion diode can not function in that regime.
