On cars with automatic transmissions, it is usually a bad sensor or vacuum line, depending on the year model. In a manual transmission car, it really depends on the procedure you use for engaging the gear. If you are new to manual transmissions, this could be the problem. A more specific description of the problem would be helpful.
when does the car, like right after it is started or when you put it into gear
Could have a large vacuum leak.
A motor will die when put in gear if there is a major vacuum leak. This causes an excessive amount of air to enter the engine and lean out the fuel mixture.
The final gear ratio. Exp. 5th gear
Quite possibly a loose motor mount bolt.
If a 1988 Chevy Cheyenne dies when it is put into gear, check the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is not getting adequate fuel, it will cause the car to die.
