The reason Catholics confess to a priest is because they claim that the priest is simply relaying what you said to God. But, even this statement is contradicting The Bible.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
There is only one "middle-man" between you and God, and that is the man Christ Jesus. So unless we put Catholicism in authority over what the Bible actually says, the Catholics are 100% wrong in the case of confessing their sins to a priest.
Protestant Christians do not believe it necessary to have confession as the Catholic church does. It derives from the scripture that tells us that if we confess our sins, God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. But our confession is to God, not to the preacher/priest.
NoA Catholic Answer (Catholics in union with the Pope)Catholics believe Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins, and that this power He gave to His followers and commissioned them to forgive sins, when He said to the Twelve: "'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.'" (John 20:21-23) Catholics priests are ordained in a line of succession that dates back to the Apostles.A non Catholic answerAccording to the Bible sin can only be forgiven by God. This forgiveness is based on the death of Jesus Christ being an all sufficient sacrifice for sin.A non believer can confess their sin to God and they then enter a new relation ship with God.Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His graceA believer can confess their (ongoing) sin directly to God, nobody else - priest pastor bishop etc - has the authority to forgive sin.1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Confess to the God of Abraham and of Jacob tell him the things you have done wrong and ask for forgiveness. He will forgive then read your bible every day. Hope you enjoy ;-)
Certainly, Catholics are required to intercede directly with God. The priest is there as God's chosen emissary. Normally, when God is speaking directly with a person, He is speaking through some means: the Bible, the priest, the Mass, etc.
No study. Just confess your sins to God and believe that he has forgiven you for Jesus sake, because the Bible says so: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1.9)
In Lutheranism, sin is seen as the disobedience to God and separation from Him, affecting every individual. Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not through good works or personal efforts. Lutherans believe that through God’s grace and Jesus' sacrifice, individuals are redeemed and brought back into a right relationship with God.
God will always forgive as long as you continue to pray and go to confession a different time.If God forgive than everyone become sinless and no law of nature. Judge forgive any one in court?Another Answer:The Bible never instructs anyone to go to a confessional or booth and privately tell your sins/transgressions to a person - usually a priest. Instead, the Scripture tells all to confess openly:James 5:16New International Version (NIV) 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
No, the Bible does not say you can forgive those who are in hell.
1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." This verse emphasizes the idea that God is always ready to forgive our sins when we repent and ask for forgiveness.
It should describe forgiveness throughout the whole bible and anyone and everyone can forgive!
I am a Protestant and in terms of beliefs we are very much the same, the biggest difference is that protestants say the final word is the Bible and no Church leader has more authority than that. Also there are more rituals for Catholics. The last thing that is greatly different is confessions which we (Protestants) believe that you only need to confess to God, where as Catholics must have the Priest as an intercessor between man and God.
The number of times the word forgive appears in the Bible, will vary depending on the version. In the KJV of the Bible, forgive appears 56 times.
