First I must say this question is NOT the same as "Why do catholics go to

church"

Catholics go to church on "SUNDAYS" because it is the day of rest and remembrance and worship of God.

Roman Catholic Answer

To worship God, and to obey Him:

The third commandment (of the Ten Commandments) is:

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

And there are Five Commandments of the Church of which the first is:

You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.

We understand that the Church, to celebrate the Lord's resurrection changed the Sabbath day of the Old Testament from Saturday to Sunday, and so we obey the Lord's command in this way.

Another answer

In actual fact, The Fourth Commanment states; "Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy....."Not the third commandment as stated above.

Also the Sabbath is Saturday and not Sunday.

This day was changed from Saturday to Sunday by the Catholic church many years ago, but as we all know Gods laws and commandments are not changeable. Our Lord says "

It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law." Luke 16:17

So the True answer to the question above is " Because the Catholic Church changed the day to Sunday"

Roman Catholic answer

The second answer above makes some points which should be addressed.

First, the question was, "why do CATHOLICS go to Church on Sunday", not why do any other people worship on Sunday or any other day.

Second, the Third Commandment is, and has always been: Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day, etc. Protestants made the first Commandment into two, and then, to escape having eleven, turn the ninth and tenth into one. The first commandment, as given in The Bible, is as follows:

I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt not have strange Gods before me. Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth. Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them. I am the Lord thy God", etc. Exodus XX, 1-6

Third, Scripture justifies the change (from Saturday to Sunday). Christ, of course, accepting the Old Law prior to fulfilling and perfecting it by His new revelation, observing Saturday. But He Himself prepared the way for the change of day. He defended His disciples when the Jews accused them of not observing the Sabbath strictly in the traditional sense. Matt. XII., 1-8. He rebukes a too severe an interpretation of the Sabbath law. Luke XIII., 10-16; XIV., 1-5; John. V 9-8; VII., 22. He shows His authority to do as He may please with the Sabbath. Mk II., 27-28. Nowhere does He re-assert the obligation of observing the Jewish Sabbath. Never does He quote this Jewish Law. In marked contrast, the New Testament pays special honor to Sunday. Christ rose on Sunday, and appeared to His Apostles on Sunday. He chose the following Sunday to appear to them when St. Thomas was present. Fifty days later He chose Sunday for the bestowal of the Holy Spirit upon His church. The first Christians themselves observed Sunday from the very beginning. "On the first day of the week, when we were assembled to break bread." Acts XX., 7. St. Paul rebuked the Galatians because of their tendency to revert to Jewish customs, and above all in their observance of Jewish days as if they were still binding. Gal. IV., 9-10. To the Corinthians he wrote, "As I have given order to the churches of Galatia, so do ye also. On the first day of the week let every one of you put apart . . . what it shall well please him: towards the collection behalf of the Church. I Cor., XVI., 1-2. In Rev. I., 10, St. John tells us that he was in the spirit "on the Lord's day," i.e. on the day on which Christ rose form the dead, and which was already dedicated to Him as sacred in a special way.

Hint on the above answers Are you really convinced that God needed to take rest on the seventh day after completing the creation events? Do you agree with me that God, the Creator, is free of human feelings of being tired, exhausted, or relaxed?

Answer to the hint

Of course not, God is a timeless Spirit, He is Eternal, He has no change, no before or after, and certainly no body to get tired, or relaxed for that matter. We are limited human beings who are trying to think in time with a human brain. We can only approximately describe what we understand that God has done.

"Rest" is just our way of describing what we see that He has done. Nevertheless it is the way that the Holy Spirit has seen fit to describe it to us, and so we go with that!

Lots of Catholics go to church...I know the church I go to is full every Sunday. I love going to church and I am Catholic.
