Christians believe that Jesus is God; one of the three persons making up the trinity.

That said, calling her "mother of God" has certain unfortunate implications, namely that she preceded and is somehow superior to God. I'm not saying that all Catholics believe this, of course, or even that most do.

Roman Catholic AnswerYou call your mother your mother even though she did not create your soul, God did. Nevertheless you do not say "the mother of my human body", no, you call her your mother even if she didn't give birth to you (if you were adopted, say) because she raised you. Well, Jesus was completely God, and completely human, and Mary was His Mother. So, of necessity she was the mother of God, this in no way implies that she is greater than God, or that she was in anyway anything other than a created human being like the rest of us; nevertheless, she gave birth to Our Blessed Lord who was God, and who called her "Mother". The fact that she was the mother of God in no way implies that she preceded Him or created Him. We call her Mother of God, because the Council of Ephesus told us infallibly that she is the mother of God.
