The gospel writers made Jesus go one better than Moses - Moses parted the water of red sea to walk on a dry land with the Jews escaping from Egypt - but Jesus performed 'a greater' miracle by walking on water.

What do christians believe that Jesus was?
Christians believe Jesus was who he said he was and proved it to the Jews, Romans and Gentiles. He is the Messiah (Jewish Savior) as promised by God to Israel. He is the Son of God making him the God/Man person sent by God himself. Christians and some Jews believe he is the only one who could enable us to get to heaven and have eternal life. Jesus was specific. If you declare he is the Son of God and turn from your sins to Him you will receive eternal life. Many of the Jews at the time were upset because he equated himself to be God and be equal with God. They crucified him for this reason (note that Jesus is Jewish). Answer from a Christian perspective. Jesus, as believed by true Christians is the Son of God but still God. The Jesus story is not really a story but recorded history. It is no more of a story than say the history of the United States. Jesus was born as prophecy foretold, taught his disciples, died and rose again from the dead. The reason that Christians believe it is applicable to us today is that Jesus died for all people. Then and now. All that believe Jesus took the punishment of our sins upon him when he died, have accepted him as our savior. We will, like Jesus, live with him after our lives here are ended.
