Because that was what the gospel writers said Jesus did and everything the Christians read in The Bible are taken as gospel truth.

The gospel writers made Jesus go one better than Moses - Moses parted the water of red sea to walk on a dry land with the Jews escaping from Egypt - but Jesus performed 'a greater' miracle by walking on water.

What do christians believe that Jesus was?

Christians believe Jesus was who he said he was and proved it to the Jews, Romans and Gentiles. He is the Messiah (Jewish Savior) as promised by God to Israel. He is the Son of God making him the God/Man person sent by God himself. Christians and some Jews believe he is the only one who could enable us to get to heaven and have eternal life. Jesus was specific. If you declare he is the Son of God and turn from your sins to Him you will receive eternal life. Many of the Jews at the time were upset because he equated himself to be God and be equal with God. They crucified him for this reason (note that Jesus is Jewish). Christians believe Jesus/The Holy Spirit/Father God are their authority and His Word (the Bible) is their authoritative guide to live by. See link below

Was it really Jesus that was crucified on the cross?

YES! read the Bible. The orthodox Christian Church had no doubts that Jesus was crucified. However, many Gnostic Christians could not believe that this was true. The Nag Hammadi document, Second Treatise of the Great Seth, says that Simon of Cyrene not only carried the cross for Jesus but also took his place on the cross. Other Gnostic Christians said that the spiritual Christ left of body of the human Jesus before the crucifixion took place.

Why did Jews believe that only they could become christians?

I don't think they do believe that. Jews believe that Jesus is not the messiah and they are still awaiting his/her arrival, thus they are not Christians.Jewish AnswerChristianity is based on concepts that are diametrically opposed to the teachings of Judaism. Who could and couldn't become Christians would have been of no concern to Jews. Please note that the Christian concept of messiah does not exist anywhere in Judaism.

What could a person gain by joining the early christians?

The same as one could gain today if they believe and follow Jesus......eternal life! Many of the early Christians lost their lives here on earth spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and gained life everlasting in Heaven. Jesus said in Mattew 10:39 "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he who loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Why is Jesus story still applicable to the human condition?

Answer from a Christian perspective. Jesus, as believed by true Christians is the Son of God but still God. The Jesus story is not really a story but recorded history. It is no more of a story than say the history of the United States. Jesus was born as prophecy foretold, taught his disciples, died and rose again from the dead. The reason that Christians believe it is applicable to us today is that Jesus died for all people. Then and now. All that believe Jesus took the punishment of our sins upon him when he died, have accepted him as our savior. We will, like Jesus, live with him after our lives here are ended. This is a promise that he gave. It applies to all people that believe. There is nothing that Jesus taught that could be considered as bad. If all people would follow his teachings we would not have the problems that we now have. I believe and therefore will live with Jesus in heaven when this body dies. These times are really no worse that they were in Jesus's time here in earth. But, because Jesus's life applies to us today, we know that time is growing short and people must decide soon whom they will serve. Man or God.

Do Christians believe in Resurrection?

If a church believes that the Bible is true then it will believe in the resurrection. Also, since the resurrection is an essential Christian doctrine and the Christian faith is meaningless without it, you could not disbelieve it and still be considered Christian in any sense.

What does the resurrection believe that Jesus did?

The resurrection is a central belief of Christianity. It states that even though Jesus was killed by the Romans, his body did not remain in the tomb. Instead, Jesus ascended to Heaven to be with His Father (God). The belief that Jesus rose from the dead is extremely important because it shows that Jesus did not really die and he could not be killed; he conquered death, and his resurrection gives Christians hope, since he is supposed to return and bring about the Final Days. It should be noted that many pagan and ancient faiths believed in a dying and rising god. Also, there is no way to know whether Jesus really rose from the dead. But to Christians, he absolutely did, because the Bible (New Testament) said so.

Is Jesus a true person to all mankind or is it just a belief?

Jesus could be a true person - historians are not sure, but assume that he probably did exist. As to his divinity, that is a matter of belief. Christians say he really is the Son of God, others say that if he really did exist he was just a man.

How can you believe in man as a god?

You can believe in man as a god if you believe that there is a higher god (or gods) who grant divinity to the man. Thus, the Romans believed that their emperor could become a god (divus, not deus, the word for a true god), and Christians believe that Jesus is both man and God.

How can Christians overcome the world?

Christians believe that Jesus overcame the world by triumphing over death-- although the Romans crucified him, the grave could not hold him; he was resurrected and rose to heaven to be with God the Father. Christians also believe Jesus was unique among all human beings: he took a human body, but he was sinless and perfect, and he willingly gave up his life so that imperfect humanity could be forgiven of their sins.

Why did Jesus appear on earth?

Most Christians believe that Jesus came to the earth in order that those who follow him could be raised up from death and enter into eternal life. Somehow, whether it is through his mere presence, through his crucifixion and resurrection, or through the acts of his life, they believe that Jesus's life on earth saved or will save such people. That is why Christians refer to Jesus as "redeemer," or other such titles. However, your question assumes that Jesus was born in some supernatural way; that he appeared on earth rather than simply being born like all other humans. And even among Christians, that idea is not universally accepted.
