This is a common misconception. Most Christians do eat meat at all times and have no special reason not to eat meat in Lent.

Some Christians - notably Roman Catholics - do abstain from meat on certain occasions - Fridays (as Jesus died on a Friday) and Lent (when he fasted in the wilderness) being among them, but these are simply traditions that grew up in the Church and not 'rules'. They do so as a mark of respect and fasting during times when Jesus himself was either fasting or on the cross.

During Lent most Christians see that time as a time of self-examination and preparation for the commemoration of the death of Jesus on Good Friday and a celebration of his resurrection on Easter Day. For some this involves abstaining from luxury food (eg chocolate!) and the money normally spent on this given to charity. Others see this time as a time of reflection, prayer, or of giving up more time for Christian tasks like helping the poor or disadvantaged, either pragmatically or financially.

However, Biblically, unlike, say, Judaism or Islam (where the consumption of pork is banned, as an example) there are no dietary rules in Christianity either in Lent or at an other time of the year.

For how many days do Christians fast?

To be honest, most Christians don't fast at all! Western Christians often give up something (usually some type of food) for Lent - 40 days before Easter. In Orthodox Christianity, things are a bit stricter - Lent is 50 days. Many Orthodox Christians give up meat for Lent - the days before Lent are called Carnival (literally "Meat Day") and celebrate the last meat eating days before Lent starts up.As well as Lent, Orthodox Christians will often give up meat in Advent - again 50 days long - leading up to Christmas.Apart from these two periods, Orthodox Christians also have "fasting days" through the year, where they avoid meat. However, when you're thinking that they are amazingly strict, you should remember that there are millions of vegetarians that don't eat meat at all. Also, for obscure reasons, shellfish isn't considered meat for fasting purposes.
