Not all Christians think Jerusalem is important anymore (other than in the secular world.) Jehovah's Witnesses as Christians find no significance in the Jerusalem of today. It was Jesus who said regarding the Jewish religious system: "Your house is abandoned to you." That's why Jesus started the Christian religious system, and did away with the sacrifices and the previous holy days. The things of the past, ended up being 'representative' of Christian concepts. For example: The sacrifices -- pointed forward to Christ Jesus, the only sacrifice that could really repurchase mankind back from slavery of sin, sickness & death.

Answer:

From Genesis (called Salem here) to Revelation, Jerusalem is the holy city of God - the center of the world. It is where God's Holy Temple was and where Christ was tried and sentenced to die. It will be the center of God's government in the Millennial Rule:

Micah 4:2New King James Version (NKJV)

2 Many nations shall come and say,

"Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

To the house of the God of Jacob;

He will teach us His ways,

And we shall walk in His paths."

For out of Zion the law shall go forth,

And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

After the old world is purged clean by fire as 2 Peter 3:10 states, a new (cleaned) Earth and a New Jerusalem will descend down with the very Throne of God (Revelation 21). The Father and Son will live amongst His new children: sons/brothers and daughters/sisters all in the Family of God.

Jerusalem is the central city of The Bible.
