Crown in Hinduism is symbol of prosperity and superiority so that's why hindu gods are shown with crown
Hindu gods and the crown:Most Hindu gods and goddesses wear a crown, Shiva being the only exception. To understand why they wear a crown we must know about the basic Hindu gods.
The seven basic Hindu gods:
They are,
1. Dreaming force - feet - Indra
2. Illusory force - knees - Shakti
3. Voluntary force - hips - Brahma
4. Semi voluntary force - abdomen - Vishnu
5. Involuntary force - Chest - Shiva
6. Status altering force - shoulders and neck - Shani
7. Compulsive force - head - Yama.
Compulsive force - the mightiest of all forces:
Therefore, crown is symbolic of the compulsive force and thus of Yama.
Of all the forces human beings have the compulsive force is undoubtedly the most powerful force. This is because it can convert any thought into an action. Its efficiency is always more than 100% because for this force to be used some else has to tolerate us and thus lose.
Compulsive force - the most dangerous force to use:
However, it is the most dangerous. It is as dangerous as the dreaming force and therefore both are supposed to play a role after our death only.
However, the compulsive force is too tempting to be discarded. Thus, this feature is added to all the Hindu gods, with the exception of Shiva.
Vishnu and the crown:
The only god the crown has suited is Vishnu. It plays a very dominant role in Venkateshwara, who is an incarnation of Vishnu.
This is because Vishnu is a status quo maintaining god and if compulsive force is found to be hazardous it can be discarded by returning to the status quo maintaining Vishnu force.
It depends on which god you are asking. Some gods wear animal skin. Others wear silk etc. For the why part, you must be kidding me... If someone asks you why are you wearing clothes?... what are ya gonna say? Think about it. :)
