because Hindus believe that this river is holy which can wash away their sins. They do this because one should be purified before reuniting to their universal god (brahman)The body is then set off to the fire to be burned but this never happened in reality. They are too lazy to recover the body so apparently the bodies are visibly seen floating ashore almost unrecognizable. Crows and dogs battle for the corpse's head. Anyway, this is just plain misbelief of the Hindu people. Such gruesome practice cannot be considered as customary.
ganges is the holiest river for Hinduism. Mythology states that after dying if ashes are thrown into ganges Moksha (liberation) can be attained.

The Maya believed in an afterlife and the importance of honoring their deceased family members. They would bury their loved ones in tombs or in family plots beneath their homes. They also performed rituals and ceremonies to remember and communicate with their ancestors and believed that the souls of the deceased would continue to guide and protect the living.
I know of no reputable funeral home which would attempt to intrude in a dispute such as this between a deceased's "friend" and the deceased's family. The reality of it is that the courts will almost ALWAYS defer to the immediate family members in the matter of the deceased's interment.
