because Hindus believe that this river is holy which can wash away their sins. They do this because one should be purified before reuniting to their universal god (brahman)The body is then set off to the fire to be burned but this never happened in reality. They are too lazy to recover the body so apparently the bodies are visibly seen floating ashore almost unrecognizable. Crows and dogs battle for the corpse's head. Anyway, this is just plain misbelief of the Hindu people. Such gruesome practice cannot be considered as customary.
