For the same reason anyone else would: it's a lot easier, more comfortable, and better for your back. Anyone who has to carry something big and heavy a good distance, would do best to carry it on their head. Carrying it in front of you with your hands is terrible for your back. Another alternative is carrying two equal buckets from a shoulder pole across your shoulders, but that's more equipment. These women just need a big jug and a cloth to put underneath it. Have you noticed their posture? It's beautiful. I'll bet their whole spine and neck is strong and healthy. I wish I could do that in America without people staring and thinking I'm weird.
