Answer:I'm an Orthodox Rabbi and I never heard of this custom. It's probably a folk thing with no basis in Jewish law. Here's a quote from one Jewish mother:"I asked my mother for the folkloric reasoning behind such a custom, but was only given a blank expression and shrugged shoulders for a response. Many Rabbis have assured me that this slapping custom is not in accordance with Jewish law."
Others have stated that its source is from non-Jewish Slavic influence.
