By 1982, Kiss' popularity had declined dramatically in the United States. It also didn't help that two of the founding members were no longer with the group. According to Paul at the time, the group had "become a caricature of itself". The internal consensus among Gen and Paul was that taking the makeup off would renergize the group and allow them to be taken seriously.

∙ 12y agoThere are many reasons why kiss wears makeup. The original reason of the make was to hide there identity. Another reason there wear it, is to stick out like a sore thumb, they want you to say, wow! that's a original band!

∙ 13y agoThey formed in the 70s, during the heyday of bands like the New York Dolls who wore makeup and looked really good, and were fans of Alice Cooper. They knew that they couldn't compete looks-wise with the Dolls, so they decided to create an extreme, definitive look that no-one could forget. It worked, and Kiss became the rock monolith they are now. It's evidently still working...
