The President and Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) couldn't rearrange the deck chairs of the Titanic if he tried, it sank 100 years ago.

But seriously, he doesn't micromanage. The expectations of the Church are already clearly laid out, and there is no possible way for him to sit and watch all 14 million Mormons to make sure that they follow every little item. He leads the same way as Joseph Smith, who said "I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves." He gives very few commandements to the membership of the church, and those that he does give are simply repeats of what they have been told since the beginning - things like selfless service, dedication to family, and preparation for the future.

The prophet mostly coordinates and approves global efforts, such as temple building and charity/humanitarian efforts. He travels almost constantly, visiting members around the world. He spends much of his free time visiting hospitals and rest homes, blessing those who are sick. He definately does not have time to micro manage.

It is true that he doesn't just sit on a throne and prophecy, that is not what a prophet does. A prophet is just a man whom God speaks through when necessary. Thomas S. Monson does hand down a few prophesies and teachings, which are sometimes veiled to those who are not truely seeking, just as the parables of Jesus were.

He has made a few more plain prophesies. For example, in the April 2006 General Conference, he cautioned church members to get out of debt and to avoid home equity loans. After making this caution, he said "the day of reckoning will come to those who continue to live beyond their means." This was ignored by many because at the time the economy and housing market were booming. However, just a short time later the economy crashed and many who were borrowing against their homes lost them.
