Meaning English translation:
{ [As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. (38)} [Quran, chapter 5, verse 38]
However, there are conditions to apply this punishment on the thief:
- He/She should admit of the theft, and
- what is stolen should not be left so carelessly that encourage the theft. For example, a shop left opened and unattended with any guard or security alarm, and/or
- not to get something to eat/drink to avoid death or starvation.
