Hazrat Hussain (RAU), the beloved grandson of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (May peace be upon him) died in the name of Truth and Islam. He laid his life in a noble cause. The Muslims should follow his footprints. Martyrs don't die. Why should the Muslims cover themselves with red paint?

The particular case you bring up is not applicable to all Muslims, but to Shiite Muslims only. Many Shiites flagellate themselves and paint themselves red in order to atone for the sins of their ancestors in not-opposing the attacks of Yazid I against Hussein. They wish that if only their ancestors had been as willing to suffer for Hussein, that he may have been able to create a Caliphate based on justice and equity. As history played out, the Shiites were on the receiving end of abuse and hatred from the Sunni community (specifically the Umayyad and Abbassid rulers).
